How to Identify a Cheap Lock (Before It Breaks)

Your lock is your initial line of protection when it comes to securing your business or home. However, not all locks are equal and far too often, many of those that appear strong and sturdy are not. Identifying cheaply made locks is simple if you know what to look for, and being aware of the giveaway signs can save you frustration, burglaries, and worse.

So, how do you identify a cheap lock before it lets you down? Let’s break it down.

1. Plastic Parts Where There Should be Metal

The biggest giveaway? Plastic parts in the lock.

We’ve seen it all: plastic tailpieces, spindles, and even internal cams. These may cut down on manufacturing costs, but they also drastically reduce durability and security. These parts wear out quickly, especially with frequent use, and are more likely to snap under pressure (or with the right jiggle from a burglar).

🔧 Pro tip: If your lock feels light or sounds hollow when tapped, it might be full of plastic.

2. It’s Too Cheap at the Home Improvement Warehouse

You know the ones: cheap big-box store locks in bright packaging for $12.99.

They’re mass-manufactured with price—not security—in mind. Yeah, they may be tempting if you’re rushed or you’re on a tight budget, but they’ll generally make use of low-budget metal, flimsy keyways, and low pick resistance.

🛑 If a lock costs less than lunch, chances are it won’t keep your house safe.

3. It Has a Generic, Easily Copied Key

Affordable locks tend to come with plain keys, easily duplicated at any hardware stand or shop. Better still, several of these keys are so generic that locksmiths can open them using “skeleton” bump keys or other universal keys.

🔑 If your key is marked “Do Not Duplicate,” don’t be misled. That’s an advisory—not a promise.

4. No Security Features to Speak Of

Better-quality locks will typically promote protection features designed in, such as:

  •   Anti-drill plates
  •   Pick-resistant pins
  •   Bump-proof cylinders
  •   Restricted keyways

Low-quality locks omit these entirely. If it doesn’t say security features on the packaging, it likely doesn’t include them.

5. You Can Feel the Flimsiness

If your lock feels loose, wobbles, or rotates too freely, then it could be a substandard mechanism within. Good quality locks are built to close tolerances—smooth but solid. A cheap lock will initially work, but operating components within will quickly exhaust themselves, causing a sticky lock, off-set latch, or even worse.
